The biggest personality trait Diavolo shows is his obsession with erasing any trace of his history and keeping his identity a secret from the world, a compulsion he will fulfill by any means necessary. Subordinates never interact directly with Diavolo, not even capos As Doppio is a completely separate soul sharing a body with Diavolo, they even have different muscular builds. His appearance differs greatly while operating as his alter-ego, Doppio. However, while Bucciarati is in control of his body, they become normal with circular highlights. His eyes are unique as his irises are "fragmented", forming as spots and shards of whole irides with a triangular shaped highlight to them. In most of his appearances, Diavolo has a slightly hunched posture when standing. In earlier depictions, varying amounts of Diavolo's hair were cut straight, inconsistently ranging from small locks to the entirety of his hair. His shirt, hidden under Doppio's sweater, appears to be made of complex mesh-wiring: it covers his shoulders and torso but down his back and abdomen are linked circles that are tucked under his belt, which in the back end in two~three long "coat tails". On his arms are elegantly designed floral sleeves leading down to a pair of wristbands. He also shares a pair of studded pants and seemingly sock-less loafers with Doppio. The rest of his hair is cut straight across at his shoulders. His appearance is drastically altered when fully revealed: Diavolo has long hair, leopard-patterned with various spots, parted in a zig-zagging manner the bangs of which are propped and parted slightly to the side. In his first appearance, covered in shadow in all but his glaring eyes, he appears to have short, combed back straight hair and is wearing a suit and tie.
The truth is often stranger than fiction, it seems, and Bruno paid a heavy price to learn that lesson.Diavolo is a veritably tall man in his 30s with a lean and semi-muscular build. The unreliable narrator technique was exposed for what it was when viewers beheld Diavolo's slender, colorful and effeminate appearance, and the tough-guy silhouette was never used again. Hence, the unreliable narrator style cemented Bruno's image of Diavolo's appearance in viewers' minds until later, when he actually appeared in person. So, the anime projected Bruno's estimated visuals on the viewers, and this image of a super-tough Diavolo was reinforced when Diavolo attacked Bruno in the bell tower. Bruno had to guess what Diavolo looked like, and picturing a brawny, well-dressed man was a fair guess, even if it was proven inaccurate later. However, other types of stories can still use it, and it's likely that the "Golden Wind" story arc did so in this case. Often, it's mystery stories and psychological thrillers that do this, where the complex truth isn't revealed until the end.
In any work of fiction, the "unreliable narrator" technique can create a sense of mystery and subjectivity to the story, helping to immerse the audience and challenge them to tell truth from lies, which adds suspense. Bruno never got a clear look at his murderous boss, but he did know who was attacking him, and the anime's visuals made use of Bruno Bucciarati's imagination. He was the very image of a classic mafia boss, and later on, Bruno had a rough encounter with Diavolo in person in a church's bell tower. Therefore, Giorno and his new ally Bruno Bucciarati can use their imagination to paint a picture of their unseen boss.Įarly in the story arc, the anime portrayed what Diavolo might look like, and the narration depicted a fairly "normal" Italian man - a brawny fellow with short hair dressed in a fine suit. Diavolo also took his time to appear, but unlike those other villains, the Joestar hero and their JoBros already knew that the character existed, since he is their gang's boss.

Many JoJo villains remain hidden until partway through the story arc where they appear, such as Kira Yoshikage the serial killer remaining anonymous until halfway through the "Diamond is Unbreakable" story arc or Pucci taking his time to make his dramatic entrance in the new "Stone Ocean" story arc.
